Max/MSP/Jitter Cloak Effect
Monday June 2nd, 2008For a class I'm in, TCS 110: Object-Oriented Programming for Artists, taught by Bob Ostertag, I created a cloak filter in Max/MSP/Jitter. It turned out pretty well, so I'm posting it here. Some of the more popular Max/MSP/Jitter artists post their patches for free, so I'm doing the same, along with a demo video of me pacing.
Download the Patch Version 4
This patch is hereby distributed under the Creative Commons "Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported" License.
Installation
You need to have the MaxMSP 5 Runtime in order to work this patch. For now, the Runtime is not available as a standalone application yet, but go to the Cycling '74 Max 5 page to download Max 5 for your computer. The Runtime is installed alongside a 30-day demo of the full application.
Instructions
The patch works by separating the subjects from the background and applying various effects to the subjects. Click the green start button to let the patch find a camera and select one in the pulldown. Then, click the yellow set up button to have the patch isolate the background. It will beep for five seconds, then play a camera shutter sound to let you know it is recording. The patch will play another sound to let you know it's done and you can walk into frame to see what you look like when you're not there.
From there, feel free to adjust whether you want to look more "Predator" or "Ghost", or how much you want to displace the background. Every background is different, so please try lots of settings. Enjoy!
